You say you’d like to get involved in buying an embryo, but you’re really not sure how to go about it. Maybe you’ve tried artificial insemination. and had some success, but embryo transfer is a really different program. It can be costly and does require considerably more expertise than does A.I. Embryo transfer has been called an art as much as a science.
At Down Under Genetics we recognize the difficulty associated with the art of embryo transfer, and we think we have a pretty good program to accommodate our embryo transfer customers. We call it The 5-6-7 Plan, and here’s how it works. You, our customer, buy and embryo for the listed price of $500. The embryo is shipped to our reproduction facility in Florence Colorado to be scheduled for transfer to one of our recipient cows.
Our veterinarian, who specializes in embryo transfers, will conduct a thorough check and preparation of the recipient cow. Once the recipient cow is implanted the customer will be billed an added $600. The customer will be informed of the progress of the pregnancy at regular intervals. The birth and condition of the calf will be reported and the calf will remain with the recip until weaning. A treatment regimen has been established which will be discussed with the owner. The cost of inoculations and of any other medical treatment agreed on will be the responsibility of the customer, and will be billed separately.
Upon weaning Down Under genetics will register the calf with the American Wagyu Association. The customer will be responsible for the final payment of $700. A full blood Wagyu calf can then be picked up at the reproduction facility or arrangements can be made for transport to the customer’s location. The customer is responsible for shipment.
It should be noted that embryo transfer is at best a risky endeavor. Full term births are not a guarantee. In actual practice a success rate of 50-60% is the norm. These are the results experienced by skilled technicians. The customer must be aware of the risk involved and his obligation to Downunder Genetics. The customer is responsible for the purchase of the embryo, and is responsible for the cost of implanting the embryo. The customer is also responsible for all medical costs. If a healthy calf does not result the customer has no further obligation but would forfeit all monies paid to date.
In the event of an unsuccessful transplant Down Under Genetics will provide the customer with the right to a second implant session for a cost of only $200. The customer would provide the embryo at cost ($500.) and would be responsible for the care and handling and calf delivery ($700.), but the normal $600 implanting charge would be reduced to $200.
The Downunder 5-6-7 program is a viable, cost effective, means of becoming involved as a full blood Wagyu breeder.
